In the City Hall office of Public Safety Director Ray Hayes there is a
manila folder marked “scenarios.”
Inside are maps and charts, notes and research. It’s the outline of what’s
in store if Mayor Chris Doherty wins the right to cut firefighters
— a staff of 150 down to about 112,
three platoons instead of four, eight fire stations eventually consolidated
to four or five.
That's a loss of half, 50% of YOUR neighborhood fire protection. Don't take the bait on the station closures. The best protection is neighborhood stations in all sections of the city. Ask Mayor Doherty which neighborhood gets fire protection?? Will you have it?
The Mayor states that today's fire numbers are down and thus require less fire protection. The Scranton Fire Dept has downsized from staffing 235 in the 1970's to 200 in the early 1980's to 150 in 1993. This downsizing reflects the current population's needs. It's a false statement that there is a need for wholesale cuts, as this Mayor has stated, it is dangerous and wrong. The city has 26 square miles. Most of the newer home construction is on the outskirts on the east and west mountains. How does eliminating neighborhood stations or the creation of a so called super station serve those people?? these concepts of super stations were proven ineffective in the 1970's.

Mayor Doherty will close 3 or 4 of the eight now operating firehouses in the city. What will the response times to your home be for fire apparatus?

Mayor Doherty is on record stating that newer building construction lessens the need for fire protection.
That statement is very misleading that new buildings are much safer and don't require the same level of fire coverage. Please watch this video to see one issue with new construction we face. It exemplifies the need for a more aggressive and faster intervention by firefighters to search and save trapped occupants more than ever.
